The major goal of the art department is to provide an opportunity for individual expression and enjoyment through the creation and appreciation of a broad range of art forms. "Talent" is not a prerequisite, but interest and enthusiasm are essential. In addition, the art department provides students with a deeper and more serious interest in art and the opportunity to develop their talent in preparation for pursuing art at the college or professional level.

Please note all prerequisites in Honors/AP courses. The department chair may make placement decisions when unusual circumstances arise

Art 1 is a hands-on course that offers instruction in the fundamentals of 2D and 3D art. Observational drawing skills will be taught. Art 1 provides exposure to a wide range of media and techniques including painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture and ceramics.

1.2c, 1.3b, 2.1c, 2.3b

Art 2 builds on the skills and information taught in Art 1. This course is for students who wish to continue their exploration of art as a means of visual expression. Emphasis is on individualized instruction addressing personal artistic needs and interests. Students will work on improving their technical and creative skills and will be encouraged to work independently when possible.

1.1b, 1.2b, 2.3b, 2.3c, 3.2

Art 3 continues to develop artistic skills and knowledge with an emphasis on in-depth understanding of materials, concepts and techniques necessary for advanced work in visual arts. Students are expected to work toward becoming self-directed and will create a body of work concentrating in an area of their choice, either 2D or 3D.

Ceramics is an advanced course in clay that will cover hand building skills as well as wheel thrown techniques. The emphasis is on improving technical and creative competence in clay manipulation and surface decoration. A portfolio and journal are required.

1.13, 1.14, 1.15, 2.16, 2.17, 3.11, 3.12, 4.13, 4.14, 4.15, 4.16, 5.11, 5.12

Advanced Painting is an in-depth exploration of various forms and styles in painting. New techniques will be introduced as well as encouraging students to expand their creative boundaries. A portfolio and a journal are required for this course.

1.2b, 1.3c, 2.2d, 4.4, 5.2

Advanced Ceramics will cover a variety of hand-building and wheel-throwing techniques, experimentation with glazes, surface treatment/decoration and the use of alternative firing processes. Students will combine independent research with hands-on exploration of clay as a creative medium. This class is designed for students who are interested in a more in-depth experience with clay. A portfolio and a log are required of all students.

1.1a, 1.3b, 2.1c, 2.2c, 2.3a, 2.3b, 2.3c, 3.1, 4.4, 5.1

Advanced Art includes those students who intend to make a career in visual art. There will be intensive exploration of media and techniques. Work will include the creation of a portfolio and artist's statement as well as the essay necessary for admission to a college or university. We will also examine the impact of art on modern society and the implications for visual arts in the future.

1.2b, 1.3c, 2.2d, 4.4, 5.2

Advanced Art (AP) is intended for highly-motivated students committed to serious study in art. The Advanced Placement program reflects three major concerns of art education: (1) quality -- a sense of excellence in one's work; (2) concentration -- a personal preoccupation with a particular mode of working, thinking, and expressing; and (3) breadth -- the variety of experiences in this formal, technical, and expressive means available to the artist.

The main objective of the Advanced Placement course is for each student to compile a portfolio of high quality work to submit it to the Advanced Placement Board for possible college credit. It is strongly suggested that students plan to take both Advanced Art 2 and AP Art in order to complete the requirements necessary to receive college credit. A research paper will be required.

Students must take AP exam in order to receive AP credit and AP weighting.
