Naming of the new EBJSHS Track for “Coach” George McCabe

On behalf of the seasoned athletes, the record breakers and the senior who joins track for the first time having never joined a high school team before, we think it is a wonderful idea to name the new track after Mr. George McCabe.
There are numerous reasons why George McCabe is so deserving of this honor. In 2005, he retired from EBHS where he was a successful Social Studies teacher, Department Chair and Key Club Advisor. He currently serves as a member of the School Building Committee, Capital Needs Committee, and is the School Committee Chair. However, his greatest accomplishment becomes evident when you realize how many young people have called him “Coach” for more than 30 years.
With a record that would make Bill Belichick envious, he has won 20 league titles, numerous state relays, and Division 4 crowns. He has an amazing overall record of 520 wins, in addition to being named Coach of the Year by The Boston Globe, not once but three times. However, as wonderful as these victories and accolades are, none are as impressive as Coach McCabe’s ability to continuously foster each athletes mind, body and spirit. Coach has the unique gift of treating each individual as a valuable member of the team, instilling camaraderie, respect and team work. As a result, this attitude resonates with his athletes, each and every one striving to do their best because they know that’s what Coach does for them. He’s not only their Coach, but often their mentor, sounding board, cheerleader and most important their number one fan. They know he takes pride in every effort they put forward, whether they break a record or barely break a sweat. He instills motivation to achieve individual success, leading to team success – hence, his winning record.
It is amazing and inspiring to see so many students, year after year gravitate to his teams. He is like a modern-day pied piper of sorts. Whether it’s cross country, indoor, or outdoor track, the numbers continue to grow. Many times, new comers will abandon the sport they thought they loved for this newfound experience of complete respect, acceptance and most of all FUN! Often high school can be a place where one will struggle to fit in. Coach finds a place for everyone to shine. With his laid-back style and quiet demeanor he fosters relationships, creates bonds and teaches life lessons that last long after the season is over. He has created lasting impressions, memories and friendships that become treasures kept forever. Every athlete and non-athlete alike admires him and knows there is no one more deserving of this honor. Coach George McCabe is the ultimate contributor to the well being of many young people.
